Desert Coast Region Rocks Once Again!! Last year, our clubs awarded $62,029 to 60 honorees. This year….drum roll, please…Our clubs awarded $93,950 to 72 honorees, including two human trafficking survivors sponsored by Soroptimists Together Against Trafficking, a collaboration of 10 clubs in the San Diego area.

Here are the 2015-2016 Soroptimist Live Your Dream Awards Desert Coast Region recipients:

District I Live Your Dream Honorees

Elizabeth Hanohano

Married with children but living at her parental home while her husband lives at his, Elizabeth knew she had to do something to provide a better life for her family.  Thanks to a friend, Elizabeth took the entrance exam and was accepted in a Pre-Vocational Nursing Course where she discovered her true calling in life – “to be a nurse.”  Elizabeth is currently on course to “live her dream.”

Elizabeth received a $2,000 Live Your Dream Award at the club level and an additional $3,000 at the region level as well as a new laptop computer generously donated by Technology Training Foundation of America, founded by SISD member Jeanette Roache.

Oralia credits her experience as being a Rio Hondo College student as “life-changing.”  Her goal is to run an organization that provides services to women who are survivors of domestic violence and/or substance abuse, an ambitious goal for a young mother of six children.

Oralia received a $2,500 Live Your Dream Award at the club level and an additional $3,000 at the region level as well as a new laptop computer generously donated by Technology Training Foundation of America, founded by SISD member Jeanette Roache.

Chelsea, who is working towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Cognitive Science while being a caregiver to her father and a mother to her son still finds time to “give back.” Chelsea volunteers at a local pregnancy center helping others single moms find a way to make college a reality so they, like her, can provide a better life for themselves and their children.

Chelsea received a $1,000 Live Your Dream Award at the club level and an additional $3,000 at the region level as well as a new laptop computer generously donated by Technology Training Foundation of America, founded by SISD member Jeanette Roache.

Sarah Soleil’s career goal is to open a nonprofit center for people who suffer from eating disorders, which is why she is going to school to become a Registered Dietician. She says, “Just imaging it brings tears to my eyes”. Her daughter is her driving force.

Coming from Somalia, East Africa to the United States was both exciting and frightening for Fathia Ismael, particularly because where she came from “women are not educated.” Learning our alphabet was the first hurdle, Fathia had to overcome but now, she is on her way to living her dream of becoming a social worker.

In 2011, at age 35, Crystal Isle enrolled as a re-entry student, “with no job skills to speak of” at San Diego City College, with the intention of getting an AA in Administrative Office Management so she could get a decent job and support her child. After a year, she discovered her true passion and is now looking forward to obtaining a Master’s Degree in Social Work so that she can work with victims of human trafficking and combat veterans who suffer from Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and PTSD.
